The Tree Planted in 1732 still Grows

People were bringing little children to Jesus in order that he might bless them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he said to them, “Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.” And he took them up in his arms and blessed them.

What is Children’s Liturgy?

In our Catholic Tradition, Children’s Liturgy is not Sunday School, rather it is the celebration of God’s Word for children who have not yet made their First Communion. At this young age, children learn the stories of how Jesus has saved us by reflecting on the Sunday Gospel in language they can understand and through activities which relate the Gospel message to their daily lives.

Who can Attend Children’s Liturgy?

This ministry is intended for children in junior kindergarten to grade 2. Once the child has received his/ her First Communion, we ask that the child remain with the congregation during Sunday Mass to learn to worship with the entire Community. It also provides the opportunity for the child to become an altar server.

Sometimes younger children feel more at ease if accompanied by a parent. Parents are always welcome to attend Children’s Liturgy if it will enhance the experience of your child.

Parents are kindly reminded to inform the Children’s Liturgy volunteers if your child has any special needs or allergies of which we should be aware.

When is Children’s Liturgy?

Children’s Liturgy begins mid-September until May and is held during the Sunday Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes and at St. Mary’s.

Benefits of Children’s Liturgy

Children’s Liturgy can help your child to:

  • celebrate the presence of God in his Word;
  • understand the gospel message in a language at their level;
  • experience the Church as community;
  • form a loving response to God’s Word; and,
  • learn about the Faith in a positive and enjoyable atmosphere.

Children’s Liturgy also encourages you to come to Mass as a family, and helps the Parish Community to embrace and acknowledge children as members of God’s family with their own unique spiritual needs.
